As promised, Kendra is adding to her harness tips with an edition of Kendra’s Tips that is all about canicross harnesses—including her top picks!
Canicross is a 6-week ZENFULdog course offered early Saturday mornings with the next course set to begin in June.
Half-back Harness
Pros:
Great line attachment
Non-choking
Non-restrictive
Shorter pull line than skijorers = steep pull angle
90% of dogs are comfortable in a short harness for canicross
Cons:
Not all short harnesses fit the same
Not all short harnesses have the same pull features—many have pull force only at the top/back (which is ok for beginner dogs who do not pull hard and who may back out of an x-back)
If poorly fitted, they are not suited for any dog—especially not hard pullers because the harness will then ride up the dog’s throat and cause great discomfort
Full-length X-back Harness
Pros:
Suited for training an experienced, hard-pulling dog
Pull force from back, bottom and sides
Might get the best use alongside using a longer line
Non-choking
Non-restrictive
Cons:
The higher point of attachment may cause it to lift upwards or turn to the side and cause chafing
Dog might be able to pull backward out of the harness
