Teaching the Magic of Nothing

Writer: Kendra MackinnonKendra Mackinnon

I speak to my clients about the importance of teaching and rewarding what onlookers might consider NOTHING. An onlooker might wonder what could they possibly be happy about? Nothing is happening. That dog is just relaxing and being. In reality all the good stuff happens in the nothing. The moments you do not take for granted. The moments your dog gets to relax, be a dog and he gets to absorb. He gets to be himself and you and he are together in a moment. We as people often forget to relax. We are constantly over thinking, worrying, planning, working and not living in the moment. We often think the only time our dogs are learning is when we are actively asking something. The truth is both dogs and people need to learn to take a moment and just be. So many behavioural issues I see can be helped by teaching both person and dog to relax together. There is happiness and bonding in all those Nothing moments because really those are the EVERYTHING moments.
